Patio and Outdoor Concrete Coating

Patio And Outdoor Concrete Coating In Sudbury, Ontario

An outdoor concrete coating seals a porch, patio, walkway or enclosed sunroom against the weather and gives it grip, colour and a finished edge.

Outdoors is a different specification from a garage. Sun, standing water and a hundred-plus days of snow cover rule out anything that yellows or goes slick.

Why Outdoor Slabs Need A Different System

Clear epoxy exposed to sunlight goes amber. On a shaded garage floor that is academic. On a south-facing porch it is visible within a season or two.

Polyaspartic is UV stable and holds its colour, which is why every outdoor floor we install is topped with it rather than epoxy.

Grip is the second difference. An outdoor slab is wet, icy or snow-covered for much of the Sudbury year, so aggregate goes into the top coat as standard rather than as an option.

The third is edge treatment. An exposed slab edge is where water gets underneath a coating, so the finish is carried around and down rather than stopped at the corner.

What We Coat Outside

Front porches and entry steps, including the curved and stepped slabs that are awkward to tile.

Covered back patios and decks poured on concrete, where the coating turns a grey slab into usable outdoor living space.

Enclosed and three-season sunrooms, which get the durability of an outdoor system with the finish of an indoor one.

Walkways, landings and pool surrounds, where slip resistance is the governing requirement.

Freeze Damage And What Can Be Saved

Outdoor slabs in Sudbury take more punishment than anything indoors. Snow sits on them for months, salt gets tracked across them, and the surface breaks down.

Light surface scaling grinds off and the slab underneath is usually sound. That is a straightforward coating job.

Deeper spalling needs patching first, and we will tell you whether the repair will be invisible or visible once coated. Usually it can be blended.

A slab that has heaved or cracked through its full depth is a concrete problem, not a coating problem. We will say so rather than putting resin over it.

Season And Timing

Outdoor work has a shorter window here than indoor work. We are generally installing exterior floors from late spring through to fall.

The slab has to be dry through its depth, not just on the surface, so a wet stretch pushes the date.

We book exterior work early in the season because the window closes fast, and we would rather move your date than install into conditions that will not hold.

Indoor work continues year round regardless.

Living With An Outdoor Coated Floor

Shovel it like any other slab. A plastic-edged shovel is kinder to the finish than a steel one, though a properly built coating handles both.

Salt is fine on the coating itself. It is the bare concrete underneath that salt destroys, and that is now sealed.

Sweep the grit off in spring. Same principle as a garage, for the same reason.

Expect to refresh the top coat sooner than you would indoors. Sun and snow load are harder on an exterior floor, and a recoat is a simple job.

What We Install

Other Floors We Coat

Sudbury Epoxy Floors installs these systems for homes and businesses across Greater Sudbury.

Blue flake epoxy floor running the width of a three bay garage

Flake Epoxy Flooring

Flake epoxy flooring is the system most Sudbury garages and basements end up with. An epoxy base coat is rolled onto ground concrete, coloured vinyl chips are broadcast into it while it is wet, and a clear top coat locks everything down.

Basement Floor Coating

Coating a basement slab takes a cold, dusty floor and makes it part of the house. The concrete gets sealed, the grey powder stops, and the surface will carry furniture, gym equipment and daily traffic.

Concrete Floor Coating

Concrete floor coating covers everything a bare slab can become: garage, basement, workshop, porch, mechanical room, shop floor or storage bay. Same principle every time, different system depending on what the floor has to survive.
